KINDERGARTEN

At the MPMM

A guided tour of the rooms of the MPMM explores people’s basic needs: eating, getting dressed, sheltering , moving around and creating. Children discover daily life in the Middle Ages in an active and playful way:

  • They are introduced to the space through an interactive ground model of the Meuse valley.
  • They discover ships and merchandise from the Middle Ages.
  • They furnish the interior of a donjon with pieces of a magnetic puzzle.
  • They bring the inhabitants back to where they live with the help of felt figurines.
  • They put themselves in the shoes of a person from the Middle Ages by dressing up in medieval fashion.
  • They synthesise their visit using a large set of illustrated dominoes.
A creative workshop, during which the children make an earthen boat, concludes the visit.

This half-day offers the opportunity to the young students to discover a new place, and to learn to place themselves in time and space. They develop their manual skills.

Duration of the visit : 2h30 (with workshop and break).

Tarif : 7,00 €/student.

Combined visits

MPMM - Castle of Vêves

In the morning, at the MPMM, students discover objects used in daily life during the Middle Ages.

In the afternoon, they become knights and discover how children their age lived in a castle. They also try out some medieval dances at the Château de Vêves.

Tarif : 6,00 €/student + 65,00 €/guide at Vêves.

One free guide per group.

 

 


PRIMARY SCHOOL

Suggested activities for 1st and 2nd year primary students

  • Guided tour of the MPMM, supported by educational information sheets (of your choice): the Meuse, the castle mound, the town, the knight (90’).

  • Creative workshops of your choice: earthen boat, coat of arms, pop-up castle, pavement tiles (90’).

  • Poilvache site: discovery game (90’ on site). Transport to the site has to be organised by the school.

 

Suggested activities for 3rd to 6th grade students

  • Guided tour of the MPMM with educational information sheets (your choice): the valley of the Meuse, the first castles, society, crafts (ceramics and brassware), weaponry (90’).
  • Creative workshops of your choice: minting coins, making a stained-glass window (painting on glass), making an illumination and making paintings using natural pigments (60’).
  • Visit of Bouvignes: the town gates, the half-timbered houses, the alleys, the castle… (45’).
  • Visit of the Crèvecœur fortification which ensures military control and monitors the river traffic (45’).
  • Poilvache site: guided tour of the site (60’ on site) or discovery game (90’ on site). Transport to the site has to be organised by the school.

"The three houses that tell"

In Dinant, three houses, three places tell the story of a living and multi-facetted  heritage. The house of the Pataphonie, Monsieur Sax et the Patrimoine médiéval mosan located on a 1.7 km route between the centre of Dinant and Bouvignes offer students aged between 8 and 12 a fun and educational and day.

Timetable : from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm.

Tarif : 9,00 €/student.

  • Poilvache site: guided tour of the site (60’ on site) or discovery game “Murder in Poilvache” (90’ on site). Travel to Poilvache has to be organised by the school.
  • Dutch language Immersion: "Let's talk about the Middle Ages"

The MPMM offers a program for Dutch immersion students aged 12 to 14, with a Dutch speaking facilitator.
Teacher receive a teaching pack after booking a visit. It provides points of reference to organise or conclude the linguistic immersion visit. It refers to the visit to the museum and includes specific vocabulary. The folder provides historical information linked to the museum visit and between the historical narrative of the Middle Ages and the useful application of language.
This linguistic immersion includes a visit to the museum. This can be supplemented by a walk in the medieval city of Bouvignes and/or by a climb to the fortification of Crèvecœur which overlooks Bouvignes (duration from 1h30 to 4h depending on the chosen activities).

HIGHER EDUCATION

The MPMM offers a wide choice of guided tours. These are provided by historians and archaeologists. 

Choice of guided tours

The MPMM

The Maison du Patrimoine Medieval Mosan, located in the old Spanish house, is both a museum and centre for interpretation. It promotes understanding of the thousand years of medieval history on the banks of the Meuse.

 

Bouvignes

Founded in the 12th century by the Count of Namur, Bouvignes has kept its medieval structure as well as many older buildings or what remains from them and which were well-integrated in the urban renovation.

 

Saint-Lambert Church

The Saint-Lambert church dominates the Bouvignes square. Built in Gothic style, it was altered over the years. The church houses a few major artworks, including a 16th century altarpiece made in Antwerp.

 

Crèvecoeur

From the top of its barred spur, Crèvecoeur dominates the ancient city. This fortress was built at the beginning of the 14th century to respond to the attacks launched from the Montorgueil tower in Dinant, located on the opposite bank of the Meuse. It was essentially built as a defensive fortress.

 

Poilvache

Poilvache, an exceptional natural site of two-and-a-half-hectare stands high on a rocky outcrop on the right bank of the Meuse. Travel to Poilvache has to be self-organised.
